Abstract

This research analyses the difficulties and prospects attributed to the right to self-determination, examining four geopolitical regions of concern: Catalonia, Kurdistan, Taiwan, and Western Sahara. Bound to encounter difficulties in garnering recognition at the international level, regions with similar quests for independence face challenges including geopolitics, diverse recognition, and internal strife. Nevertheless, pathways toward resolution through the promotion of negotiation, international mediation, and human rights principles still exist. The role played by important states and the UN in this situation is critical in determining outcomes. In summary, the findings provide a good understanding of how the right to self-determination operates today, focusing on rights-based approaches to addressing the different practices and particulars these regions seek regarding human rights and international law.
